“First draft of chapter plan” [Part II]

This item is an early, detailed outline of Part II with various revisions by Rand. This item and her “first draft” outlines for Parts III and IV of the novel (see below) are all dated June 5, 1938, indicating that she completed them prior to her first detailed outlines for Part I (see above), which are dated June 15 of that year.

The edits show where Rand started to finalize some of the novel’s details. For example, she changes “library” to “C-S” as a shorthand for “Cosmo-Slotnick,” having decided on a film company as the source of the building competition that Keating wins. Another point of interest is that Rand has already identified the construction of the Stoddard Temple and the subsequent lawsuit against Roark as the final events of this part, marking a major setback for Roark’s career.
