Notes on Toohey and second-handers
Rand’s first note here contains thoughts that are ultimately touched on in the novel via the sculptor Stephen Mallory’s identification of a “drooling beast” that he fears: something that seems human, but with which you can have no communication.
The second note, apparently a later follow-up to the first, contains additional points about Toohey’s character and how he encourages second-handedness in people. Onkar Ghate’s essay “The Basic Motivation of the Creators and the Masses in The Fountainhead” addresses this element of the novel further.
