“Revised schedule of chapters” [Part II]
This Part II outline is a revision created much later in early 1940. As noted at the top, Rand has already written the first two chapters of Part II at this point and is revising what comes after in greater detail than her 1938 outline.
Rand did not base any of her characters directly on real people. “In a very generalized way,” she noted in her later biographical interviews, “the characters were already in my mind first.” Once she created those characters, real people sometimes provided later “contributory influences,” which “served merely to concretize and anchor certain abstractions” for Rand. For this reason, Rand occasionally used the names of real people as temporary placeholders for minor characters. One instance of this can be seen in this outline, where she uses the name “Gertrude” (Gertrude Stein) as a placeholder for the character of Lois Cook.
