“First draft of chapter plan” [Part III]

This was Rand’s first detailed outline of Part III. It contains some notable differences from the final novel, including events and characters (such as a young writer and a mistress of Roark’s) that Rand later removed. The “Summer Resort” (Monadnock Valley) project appears here, but in this early version, Rand thought that a flood would be the test of its success (with the resort’s owners counting on the flood to destroy it, but with Roark having built it to withstand the flooding). Rand later removed the flooding aspect of this event and moved the Monadnock Valley sequence to the beginning of Part IV of the novel, rather than keeping it in Part III.

Rand’s papers do not contain any other detailed outlines dedicated only to this third part of the novel.
